Susan Kieck Obituary

Susan Kay (Atkinson) Kieck, age 76 of rural Dalton, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023, after a short stay at Columbia Healthcare Center in Wyocena. Susan was born January 16, 1947, to Lillian (Nehls) and Raymond Atkinson at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. Her father had to get his truck out to get Lillian to the hospital due to the snow-covered graveled Military road at the time.

Susan grew up on their farm and attended Ebenezer Williams School through 5th grade. She then attended Marcellon School. She graduated from Pardeeville High School in 1965. After choosing her teaching career, she graduated from Columbus Teachers College. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Oshkosh. Susan then taught 2nd grade for 7 years at Rio Elementary School. In the years following teaching, she and Gerald always raised a huge garden giving much of the abundance to relatives, friends, and neighbors.

She inherited a love of the West, which led her and Gerald on numerous trips to the Dakotas to visit relatives. Included their stay in Deadwood, which they both enjoyed. She also shared many years traveling back to South Dakota with her sister Linda, where they attended the rodeo at Faith, and many times again enjoyed the company of relatives. Susie was a true-giving gal, helping out many older folks with their tasks or appointments. She and Gerald hosted many family reunions. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pardeeville, where she married the love of her life, Gerald Kieck June 29, 1968.

Susan is survived by her husband Gerald Kieck, sisters Wanda Atkinson of Portage, Patricia Tamminga of Columbus, Sally (Hayden) Jerome of rural Dalton, and Linda (Larry) Rhode of rural Portage; brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Sandy Kieck of rural Dalton; and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Lillian Atkinson; sister Juanita Graff; brother Larry Atkinson in 1943; brother-in-laws Alfred Graff and Ronald Tamminga; mother and father-in-law Irene and Walter Kieck.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 20 at 2 PM at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor James Plocher officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, east of Dalton, and luncheon to follow. Visitation will be held at noon until the time of service. Special Heartfelt thanks to nieces, Barb Lang and Nancy Hoffmann for their loving care these past few years.
