Robert Clayton Bortz (Bob), 83, of Portage, passed away on Monday, September 1st. Born on May 7, 1942, in Portage, to Clayton and Irma Bortz.
Bob graduated from Portage High School in 1960. He then entered the US Army in July of that year and was stationed at Vilseck, Germany army base to support the Berlin Conflict. He eventually achieved the rank of Army Infantry Sgt E-5. He was honorably discharged in 1963. He was married from 1963 to 1986 to Georgia Kluge, during which time they had 3 sons Tim, Dean and Roy.
Bob was a hard-working and dedicated man. He started working at the railroad in 1964, he retired after 38 years from CP Rail as a Track Inspector. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for his family. He was a man of integrity, kindness, generosity, and he left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, watching the wildlife around his home and visiting friends and family members.
He is survived by his sons Timothy (Chris) Bortz, of Portage, Dean Bortz, of Fond Du Lac, and Roy (Janet) Bortz, of Westfield; grandchildren (great grandchildren) Trevor Bortz, Taylor/Gabe Swalheim (Grayson, Sawyer), Gunnar Bortz (Makenna, Ezra), Brett/Makenzie Bortz (Arlo), Becky/Stephen Noel (Roger, Thea, Caroline) and Cassie Bortz. He is further survived by his significant other of 16 years, Laura Tammisto, and his sisters, Donna Olson (Ross Porter) and Marianne Tomlinson; as well as many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Irma Bortz and siblings William and James.
He did not want a funeral ceremony. Inurnment will be at a later date.
