Richard G. Chatterton Obituary
Richard Glenn Chatterton, born to Gladys Marie (Wagoner) and Glenn Chatterton in Pontiac, Michigan on September 28, 1931, was called home to our Lord and Savior on December 29, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Richard graduated from Roosevelt High School of Keego Harbor, Michigan in 1949. He fondly recalled helping his father with deliveries for Kraft during his high school years, where he also excelled in football and expressed a lifelong passion for automobiles, which was noted in his high school yearbook.
Following graduation, Richard proudly served in the United States Navy for four years. In 1951, he met the love of his life, Billie Iris Simpson, and they married in High Point, North Carolina, in 1954. Their enduring love story spanned an incredible 72 years, and Richard often shared how proud he was to be her husband as well as the length of their marriage.
Richard joined American Motors Corporation in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 1967 as a tool engineer and rose to become the Vice President of Operations. He was instrumental in the joint venture between AMC-Chrysler and Beijing Jeep Corporation where he was Director of Operations which allowed him and Billie to experience life in China for two years. Known for his generosity and commitment to helping others, Richard directly supported numerous organizations during his time at American Motors Corporation with the donation of equipment for such organizations as Shepherd, Inc. for disabled individuals, Southern Colony Children of Wisconsin, Taylor’s Children Home, the Department of Public Affairs in Kenosha, The United Way, The Christian Youth Council, and The Scout Leader Rescue Squad. In his later years, he dedicated himself to supporting local churches and aiding those in need.
Richard was a proud member of the American Legion in Wisconsin Dells, the Detroit Tool Engineers Association, the Masonic Lodge, and Tripoli Temple. His hobbies included spending quality time with his family, meticulously maintaining his home, and taking daily rides to survey his property in his Gator with his beloved dog Guido by his side.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, his sister Barbara, and his daughters: Cynthia Renee Davis and Carla Kristine Key. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his cherished wife, Billie, his daughter Sharon Chatterton of Wisconsin Dells, WI, his son Thomas Chatterton (Susan) of Georgetown, TX, his brother Gerald Chatterton (Fond du Lac, WI), his grandchildren Cherokee, David, Grant, Jared, Jordan, Madison, Richard, Sarah, and Thomas and his five great granddaughters Callie, Caroline, Hailey, Hattie, and Isabella, as well as many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
In honor of Richard’s strong Christian beliefs, the family requests that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Whitehead Union Baptist Church, 4481 Spicer Mountain Road, Whitehead, NC 28675 (in memory of Richard Chatterton).
Service and burial will be held privately.
