Gilbert D. Anthony Obituary

Gilbert “Don” Anthony, age 68, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 20, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 2, 1957, in Birmingham, Alabama, Don was the beloved son of Connie and Gilbert L. Anthony. His life was defined by a profound devotion to his family including his beloved dogs and a love of sports.

Don’s talent for writing and his fascination with sports converged as he pursued higher education at Auburn University. There, he studied journalism, immersing himself in the art of storytelling and the craft of communication. His studies led him to forge a path as a sportswriter, a profession that perfectly blended his interests and skills. Don joined the staff of the Auburn newspaper, where he quickly distinguished himself for his insightful reporting, lively prose, and genuine rapport with athletes, coaches, and fans. His coverage of Auburn athletics became a staple for readers eager to know more about their favorite teams and players, and Don’s stories captured both the excitement of competition and the personal journeys behind the headlines.

Don’s second career was in greyhound racing, another thing in common he shared with his parents and the family business.  In addition, he served as the director of racing at several greyhound tracks across the country and was known fondly as “Big Don” and was quite skilled as a handicapper for races.

Don’s journey took a joyful turn when he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Peggy Lee Gillingham, in Seaside, Florida. Their wedding marked the beginning of a partnership built on mutual respect, affection, and shared adventure. Their love was steadfast and nurturing, enduring through life’s changes and providing a foundation for family, friendship, and community. Don’s devotion to Peggy was evident to all who knew them—whether they were traveling, hosting gatherings, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, their bond was a source of inspiration and comfort.

Throughout his 68 years, Don’s love of Auburn, the beaches of Florida, and the thrill of NASCAR reflected a spirit that sought joy in the world. Don’s writing brought people together, his laughter eased burdens, and his steadfast presence gave strength to those around him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Connie and Gilbert L. Anthony; mother-in-law Mary Ellen Gillingham; niece Jolina Hintz; and sister-in-law Cynthia (Gillingham) Krause. Gilbert is survived by his cherished wife, Peggy (Gillingham) Anthony; his brother Dee (Eleanor) Anthony of Murphy, NC; his nieces Nicole (Sean) Brooks of Savannah, GA, Kelly Anthony of Savannah, GA, Danielle (Chris) Schelm of Friendship, WI; Michele (Shane Kinsey) Santiago of Waupun, WI, Mary (Brad) Van Schoyck of Osseo, WI; nephews Brandon (Kendra) Corning of Pardeeville, WI, and Thomas Krause of Endeavor, WI.  He also is survived by his father-in-law Norman Gillingham of Madison, WI;  two sister in laws Sheree (Tom) Vande Brink of Madison, WI and Dawn (Charlie Little) Gillingham of Pardeeville, WI and two brother in laws Thomas (Page) Krause of Madison, WI and James Krause of Endeavor, WI; many cousins' a few very special aunts and uncles and a countless number of very close friends who will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hoovers Hause Rescue Center in North Prairie, WI  in celebration of Don’s lifelong commitment to his love of his four-legged babies.  A celebration of his life will be held in his honor on October 4, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at the Anthony residence in Portage, WI.
