Donald J Gartland Obituary
Donald J. Gartland, age 94, of Poynette, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2026.
Donald proudly served his country, first spending two years in the United States Army before continuing his military service in the United States Air Force. He was a Korean War veteran, a chapter of his life he carried with quiet pride.
Known for his ever-present smile and infectious laugh. He had an unmatched knowledge of Wisconsin—every barn, country road, and small town—earning him the affectionate title of him being “Google before Google.” He was always willing to help anyone at anytime.
He founded the Midwest’s first barn painting business of its kind, taking his work across five states. He was also one of the cofounders of the Rio Airport and the owner and operator of what became the largest Christmas tree farm in Wisconsin—endeavors that reflected his entrepreneurial spirit and love for the land.
He attended college in Pittsburgh, where he studied radio communications, a field that fueled his lifelong interest in learning and history.
Above all else, Donald cherished time spent with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, studying history, and lending a helping hand wherever it was needed.
Donald is survived by his daughter, Catherine Sendelbach; his sons, David Gartland and Bill (Julie) Gartland; five grandchildren, Jamielee (Shane), Elizabeth ( Hogan), Megan, (Fiancé” JJ) , Sara, and Daniel; one great-granddaughter, Olivia; and his special friend, Amy. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Sabina of the VA, whom he greatly respected and appreciated and his hospice nurse Julie, for her compassionate care and kindness. We are grateful for Donald’s life and the legacy he leaves behind. Rest in peace.
Private funeral services are pending.
