Charles Herzing Obituary

Charles Herzing, 78 of Cazenovia, died Thursday, September 22, 2022. Chuck was born in Reedsburg to Clarence and Beulah (Ford) Herzing December 16, 1943 and attended Weston High School where he met the love of his life, Carol J. Gudenschwager. They were married June 27, 1964 and enjoyed 39 years together before she was called to her heavenly home in 2003.

Chuck was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hill Point and served on their council. He had a long career at Wisconsin Dairies in Reedsburg while also running a small dairy farm with his wife and three daughters, and eventually his grandson Chris. He always hummed while he worked, and often treated his family to a trip to town for ice cream after a hard day's work. From planting crops, raising cattle, and nurturing his family, to coaxing movement back to his limbs after a 2004 farming accident that left him with quadriplegia, Chuck's life was the ultimate testament to the powers of faith in Jesus, hard work, and perseverance.

After his injury, Chuck was blessed to have many wonderful in-home caregivers, especially Mary Stauffer who become his dearest friend. He loved to play Euchre and various board games. If you wanted to win, you were his partner, not his opponent.

He is survived by three daughters, Julie (Jeff) Thieding of Loganville, Janet (Joe) Fletcher of Johnson Creek, and Joan (Gary Flesher, Jr. ) Herzing of Madison; four grandchildren, Christopher (Jamie) Unbehaun, Jaclyn (Nick) Trodahl, Ryan Mueller, and Randy (Julianna) Mueller, two great grandchildren Zander and Avery Unbehaun; sister Cherylene Volz of Cazenovia, and nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Carol, parents, and an infant brother Kenneth.

Funeral service will be held Friday, September 30 at 11 AM at St. John Lutheran Church in Hill Point with Rev. Daniel Lewig officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery in Willow Township. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 29 from 4 to 7 PM at Grasse Funeral & Cremation Service in Reedsburg (formerly Hoof Funeral Home). Visitation will also be held from 10 AM until the time of the service at the church Friday.
