Bertha Sarah Elwood, age 98, formally of Lime Ridge, was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, February 11, 2024 with her family by her side. She was born on August 7, 1925 in the town of Ironton, Sauk County, youngest child of Albert Ihde and Virginia (Smith) Ihde.
She was baptized on October 11, 1925 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Reedsburg by T. S Beavin. She married Donald William Elwood on November 2, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Reedsburg. Her faith and trust in God was important to her and was evident in the love she displayed to her family, friends, and those whom she met along life’s journey.
She was gifted with many talents which include singing in the church choir and earlier when she sang with her brother Donald and uncles in a USO band, hairdresser, giving haircuts, sewing, and crafting. Her hobbies were playing cards, bowling, feeding and watching the birds, caring for her flowers in the house and out in the garden while admiring God’s creation. She was a member of the Wheelerburg Homemakers and a fan of the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers sports.
She was employed at a sewing company in Reedsburg, Schultz Bros dept. Store, Prange Way, selling Avon products, assisting her husband at Don’s Mobil Station in LaValle, as well as being a loving housewife and mother. She volunteered at the Sauk County Health Care Center, Senior Life Center, United Methodist Church folding bulletins, Reedsburg Area Medical Center, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to whoever needed one.
She is survived by her daughters Judy (Jerry) Pfaff of Hillpoint, Janet (Mike) Hanser of Greybull, WY, and Karen (Kent) Westphal of Loganville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Dorothy Gustina of South Beloit, IL and Joyce Elwood of Beloit; special niece Donna Davis; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Don of 75 years; granddaughter Lisa Pfaff; brothers Donald and Chet Ihde; sisters Ruby Meyer and Ileen Shannon; and 2 furry companions Chico and Buttons.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, February 17 at 11 AM at the Reedsburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Vicki Brantmeyer officating.Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Interment will follow at the Lime Ridge Cemetery with a luncheon after at the Reedsburg United Methodist Church in fellowship hall.
We wish to thank the staff at Our House Senior Living in Reedsburg for the care given to mother during her stay there. In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials can be made to the Reedsburg United Methodist Church and would be appreciated.
