Bernice "Alabama" Hembree

Bernice "Alabama" Hembree (nee Stephens) was called home on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the age of 92. Born February 16, 1931, to the late Marcus Boss and Trannie (Cagle) Stephens in Delmar, AL.

She was known for her sass and spunk, but also for her love, kindness, generosity, and humor. Bernice left an impression quite literally on everyone she met. She was a strong, hardworking woman who loved her family. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her knew her love of cooking. The house was always filled with an abundance of food and she wanted nothing more than to fatten you up. Her cooking drew you to her home and there was always enough for 30 even if there were only 5 of you.

Bernice was preceded in death by her 4 sisters and brother. Also, by her soul mate James V. Hembree, son James "Douglas" Hembree, and great-granddaughter Peyton Marie Holland. She is survived by her loving son Jeff (Wanda) Hembree and daughter-in-law Marilyn Adler Hembree, her grandchildren Jason Hembree, Angie (Kenny) Lipinski, Steven (Andrea) Hembree, Erica (Mark) Piekarski, Jenna (Bill) Holland, Katie (Kyle) Block and 15 great-grandchildren and further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. The family would also like to thank her "second family" at Patriot Place in Berlin for their love and care these past 3 years. 

No services will be held at this time. Celebration of life will be held at a later date.
