Shirley J. Nelson

Shirley Jean Nelson, age 81 of Rio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Monday, April 16, 2018 at UW Hospital in Madison.

She was born February 5, 1937 in Markesan to LeRoy and Irene (Schweder) Schoephoester. She graduated from UW Oshkosh with a bachelor’s degree in education. She was united in marriage to Duane Nelson August 13, 1961 in Markesan. Shirley taught English and French in Rio for many years before taking the position as Rio Community librarian and was influential in building the new library. Shirley was very active at Redeemer Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed reading, completing puzzles, colored pencil artistry, attending Norwegian festivals, rose mauling, and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Duane of Rio, son Eric (Kenda) Nelson of Rio, daughter Lori (Keith) Gilbertson of Fox Lake; grandchildren Kashden Nelson, Trevor Kelley, and Laci Kelley; great-grandson Tyson Kelley; brothers Ron (Karen) Schoephoester and Richard (Ardell) Schoephoester; many nieces and nephews, and special friend like a sister Nancy Wescott.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21 at 11 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rio with Rev. Ann Walsvik officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 AM until the time of services at the church. Memorials in Shirley's memory may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Rio Community Library.
